Mauritius in a few words

With a stable political system and economy, boasting positive growth for over 25 years combined with a strategic geographical location in the heart of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius has become a privileged destination for foreign investors.

Mauritius takes pride in being one of the rare multicultural countries where all cultures come together. This harmonious environment allows Mauritius to boast an extremely low crime rate.

Mauritius vs South Africa

"I'm not sure if I'm ready to leave"

We understand this sentiment and we hear it more often than you may think. Many South Africans love their country and would never consider leaving. However, due to the political instability, continuing devaluing currency, and crime rates, thousands of South Africans are coming to the realization that they need to formulate a plan B. Many of our clients aren’t quite ready to leave yet but they would like to know their options. This is where the retirement permit comes in. Submit your application and gain Mauritius residency, which will then allow you to open a foreign bank account in USD. This will allow you the ability to move some funds into hard currency. If you’re not ready to leave the shores of South Africa just yet, there is no rush. Your Mauritian residency will already be approved, giving you the option to head to the airport at any point.

Are they of international standard?

Arguably, our clients’ number one concern is if there is adequate healthcare should they get sick. Mauritius is no longer a small island in the middle of the ocean. Mauritius boasts world class hospitals and surgeons. Many have trained abroad in France, Australia, and South Africa – ultimately returning home to Mauritius to provide their skilled services. The newly completed Apollo Bramwell hospital is of international standard and offers superior medical care to the young and old.

Mauritian Residency vs Citizenship

Aren’t they the same?

The question we are often asked. In short, they are not the same. However, both citizenship and residency allow the holder and their family to live in Mauritius. Residency is obtained through your retirement permit and is granted for 3 years. After this 3-year period, you may then extend your residency for a further 10 years. Once you have remained a resident for 10 years, you may then choose to apply for citizenship and obtain a Mauritian passport. Alternatively, you may also extend your residency for a further 10 years.

Retirement Permit Restrictions

What is allowed and what’s not

Gaining Mauritian residency through the retirement permit is a cost-effective solution that comes with few restrictions. However, there are still some restrictions that need to be considered. The first is that you must be 50 years old or above. The second restriction is that this permit doesn’t allow the holder to work in Mauritius*. You can, however, have businesses outside of Mauritius. If you are looking to run a business on the island, we do have other permits that are more suitable. You can view these options by visiting our partner site –

Family and the retirement permit

Whether you are single, married, or have children, the retirement permit is an option. The main applicant simply needs to be over 50 years old. Your spouse or partner can be of any age and would apply for a permit as a dependent of yours. The same situation would apply for your children, providing that they are 24 years old or younger.

Eligibility Criteria

Your family and you

Obtaining your Mauritian residency through a retirement visa is a straightforward process. However, there are a few requirements that need to be met. Firstly, the main applicant must be 50 years or older. Your spouse or partner can be any age and your children up to the age of 24. Secondly, you need to be able to provide proof of funds in order for the government to determine that you will be able to support yourself and your family (if applicable). These funds will need to be placed in your new Mauritian bank account and can be held in any currency (MRU, USD, GBP etc.) Over 3 years, $54 000 will need to be transferred into your Mauritius bank account. This equates to $1500 per calendar month, or approximately R22 000*.

Check list

  • 50 years old or above
  • R22000.00* per month for 3 years (These are the funds you will live on, they remain your funds)
  • Mauritian bank account in any currency USD, GBP, MUR, ZAR (part of our service)
