Health care in Mauritius is no longer an area for concern. Hospitals and care facilities are of international standard and often exceed many facilities found in South Africa. Hospitals have employed internationally educated staff, which will ensure you will receive the best medical care should you need it.
The question we are often asked. In short, they are not the same. However, both citizenship and residency allow the holder and their family to live in Mauritius. Residency is obtained through your retirement permit and is granted for 3 years. After this 3-year period, you may then extend your residency for a further 10 years. Once you have remained a resident for 10 years, you may then choose to apply for citizenship and obtain a Mauritian passport. Alternatively, you may also extend your residency for a further 10 years.

Retirement Permit Restrictions
What is allowed and what’s not
Gaining Mauritian residency through the retirement permit is a cost-effective solution that comes with few restrictions. However, there are still some restrictions that need to be considered. The first is that you must be 50 years old or above. The second restriction is that this permit doesn’t allow the holder to work in Mauritius*. You can, however, have businesses outside of Mauritius. Family
Family and the retirement permit
Whether you are single, married, or have children, the retirement permit is an option. The main applicant simply needs to be over 50 years old. Your spouse or partner can be of any age and would apply for a permit as a dependent of yours. The same situation would apply for your children, providing that they are 24 years old or younger.
Obtaining your Mauritian residency through a retirement visa is a straightforward process. However, there are a few requirements that need to be met. Firstly, the main applicant must be 50 years or older. Your spouse or partner can be any age and your children up to the age of 24. Secondly, you need to be able to provide proof of funds in order for the government to determine that you will be able to support yourself and your family (if applicable). These funds will need to be placed in your new Mauritian bank account and can be held in any currency (MRU, USD, GBP etc.) Over 3 years, $54 000 will need to be transferred into your Mauritius bank account. This equates to $1500 per calendar month, or approximately R22 000*.
